Ten of the MASC Presidents who have led the association over the past 30 years attended the annual meeting at the Catonsville Senior Center to offer their congratulations and reminisce about what MASC was like during their tenure.
Shelley Garten, MASC President from 1982-1983 who now works as the Deputy Administrator for the Howard County Office on Aging, said MASC was established because senior centers were relatively new in Maryland and staff needed a networking venue. Tina Dubas, MASC President from 1992-1993, drove almost 200 miles from New Jersey to share in the event. Newly retired, Tina re-joined MASC as a retiree so she can keep abreast of what is happening in Maryland's senior centers. Julie Lynn (2005-2007) and Kathy White (2004) both spoke about how personally gratifying it was to be involved with MASC and shared stories of navigating through the legislature in Annapolis to raise awareness of MASC.
In total, twenty individuals have served as MASC President from 1980 through 2010. A 30th Anniversary Committee will be formed to plan celebratory events for the year. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please e-mail Jill Hall at jphall@baltimorecountymd.gov.

MASC Awarded NISC
"State Association of the Year" Award |
Maryland Association of Senior Centers was honored with the “State Association of the Year Award” by the National Institute of Senior Centers, an interest group of the National Council on Aging at its conference in Las Vegas in March. MASC was recognized for its “outstanding creative technical assistance in promoting the growth, development and expansion of state associations of senior center organizations”.
Members of state associations across the nation were particularly impressed with the diversity of resources offered by MASC to professionals working in senior centers. Noreen Best, NISC Delegate from New Jersey and chair of the State Association and Membership Committee which unanimously selected Maryland for the award, said “Maryland provides so much for their members including a weekly e-mail programming tip, a wonderful website, great workshops and program excellence awards that are the envy of other state associations.”

This is the second time MASC has won the "State Association of the Year" award. MASC also accepted this honor in 2004.
Spring Training a Great Success |
At the Spring "Let's Get Creative" Training held in Bowie on March 6, seventy people learned how to be more creative in their health and recreational programming, as well as how to design more effective newsletters. Evaluations from the training event were very positive and most attendees indicated they plan to participate in the June 26, 2009 Annual Meeting and Training.
Business members Medi-CareFirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield, MJM Innovations and Nutrition, Inc. had an opportunity to discuss their products and everyone enjoyed the wonderful food provided by Nutrition Inc. and MASC.
Thank you to our presenters for sharing their handouts:

"Make a Connection"
2009 Senior Centers Month Theme |
Each year the Administration on Aging (AoA) issues a theme for Older Americans Month in May to assist our National Aging Services Network of state, tribal, area agencies on aging, and community services providers plan for activities that might take place in May or throughout the year. This year’s theme “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow” reflects AoA’s continued focus on prevention efforts and programs throughout the country that are helping older adults have better health as they age and avoid the risks of chronic disease, disability and injury.
